Glanbia, the global nutrition group, along with US dairy co-operatives – Dairy Farmers of America and Select Milk Producers – expect to commission their new joint venture large-scale cheese and whey production facility for the State of Michigan in the fourth quarter of 2020 at a cost of $470 million.
The new facility will process 3.6 million litres of milk per day into a range of cheese (135,000 mt per year) and whey products for US and international markets. The site will employ approximately 250 staff when in full production.
The joint venture partners have reached an agreement with Proliant Dairy Ingredients to process the whey permeate. A dairy ingredient manufacturer headquartered in Ankeny, Iowa, Proliant will invest $85 million in an adjoining facility in Michigan, creating up to 38 jobs.
